2013%20finished%20160%20km%20in%20a%20mean%20time%20of%2026.2%20%2B%5C%2F-%203.6%20hours.%5CnRESULTS%3A%20Finishers%20ingested%20nearly%2030%2C000%20J%2C%2019.4%20%2B%5C%2F-%208.1%20L%20of%20fluid%20and%2016.4%20%2B%5C%2F-%209.5%20g%20of%20sodium%20%28Na%29.%20Sodium%20and%20fluid%20intake%20per%20hour%20was%20estimated%20to%20be%200.6%20g%5C%2Fhour%20and%200.7%20L%5C%2Fhour%2C%20respectively.%20Electrolyte%20intake%20during%20the%20first%20half%20of%20the%20race%20was%20similar%20between%20those%20that%20finished%20the%20race%20and%20those%20that%20did%20not.%20Finishers%20ingested%20fluid%20at%20a%20greater%20rate%20than%20non-finishers%20%28p%20%3D%200.01%29%20and%20tended%20to%20meet%20their%20caloric%20needs%20more%20closely%20than%20did%20non-finishers%20%28p%20%3D%200.09%29.%20Body%20weight%20was%20unchanged%20over%20time%20%28ANOVA%2C%20p%20%3D%200.52%29.%20Serum%20Na%20concentration%20tended%20to%20fall%20from%20143%20to%20140%20mEq%5C%2FL%20during%20the%20race%20%28p%20%3D%200.06%29%2C%20and%20was%20inversely%20correlated%20with%20weight%20loss%20%28p%20%3D%200.009%29.%20Serum%20Na%20concentration%20was%20lower%20mid-race%20in%20runners%20experiencing%20changes%20in%20mental%20status%20than%20in%20runners%20without%20changes%20%28p%20%3D%200.04%29.%20Fluid%20intake%20was%20inversely%20correlated%20with%20serum%20Na%20concentrations%20%28p%20%3D%200.04%29.%20Most%20of%20the%20runners%20experienced%20nausea%20or%20vomiting%3B%20these%20symptoms%20were%20not%20related%20to%20serum%20sodium%20concentration.%20Hyponatremia%20%28%3C135%20mEq%5C%2FL%29%20was%20seen%20in%20one%20runner%20at%2088%20kms%2C%20but%20resolved%20by%20160%20km.%20Urinary%20sodium%20excretion%20decreased%20%28p%20%3D%200.002%29%20as%20serum%20aldosterone%20concentration%20increased%20pre-%20to%20post-race%20%28p%20%3C%200.001%29.%20From%20start%20to%20finish%20of%20the%20race%20plasma%20volume%20increased%20by%2012%25.%5CnCONCLUSIONS%3A%20Food%20and%20fluid%20was%20ingested%20at%20a%20greater%20rate%20than%20described%20previously.%20Runners%20consumed%20adequate%20fluid%20to%20maintain%20body%20weight%20although%20dietary%20sodium%20fell%20far%20short%20of%20the%20recommended%201%20g%5C%2Fhour.%20The%20rate%20of%20fluid%20intake%20was%20greater%20in%20finishers%20than%20in%20non-finishers%2C%20and%20finishers%20tended%20to%20more%20nearly%20meet%20their%20energy%20needs.%20Maintenance%20of%20body%20mass%20despite%20large%20exercise%20energy%20expenditures%20in%20extreme%20heat%20is%20consistent%20with%20fluid%20overload%20during%20a%20running%20event%20lasting%20more%20than%2024%20hours%20in%20hot%20and%20humid%20conditions.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%22Dec%202002%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22eng%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1080%5C%2F07315724.2002.10719254%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%220731-5724%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22S56ZU2DB%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222020-04-21T18%3A28%3A49Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
