rry%20juice%20in%20treating%20pain%20and%20other%20features%20of%20knee%20osteoarthritis%20%28OA%29.%5CnMETHODS%3A%2058%20non-diabetic%20patients%20with%20Kellgren%20grade%202-3%20OA%20were%20randomized%20to%20begin%20treatment%20with%20cherry%20juice%20or%20placebo.%20Two%208%5Cu00a0oz%20bottles%20of%20tart%20cherry%20juice%20or%20placebo%20were%20consumed%20daily%20for%206%20weeks%20with%20a%201%20week%20washout%20period%20before%20switching%20treatments%20%28crossover%20design%29.%20Western%20Ontario%20McMaster%20Osteoarthritis%20Index%20%28WOMAC%29%20scores%20and%20walking%20times%20were%20recorded%20prior%20to%20and%20after%20each%20treatment%20period.%20Additionally%2C%20plasma%20urate%2C%20creatinine%20and%20high%20sensitivity%20C-reactive%20protein%20%28hsCRP%29%20were%20recorded%20at%20baseline%2C%20after%20the%20first%20treatment%20period%20and%20after%20the%20second%20treatment%20period.%20Acetaminophen%20was%20allowed%20as%20a%20rescue%20drug%20and%20self%20reported%20after%20each%20treatment%20period.%20Treatment%20effect%20was%20examined%20with%20repeated%20measures%20analysis%20of%20variance%20%28ANOVA%29%20using%20an%20intention-to-treat%20%28ITT%29%20analysis.%5CnRESULTS%3A%20There%20were%20five%20withdrawals%20during%20the%20cherry%20juice%20treatment%20%28four%20adverse%20events%20%28AEs%29%29%20and%20seven%20withdrawals%20during%20the%20placebo%20treatment%20%28three%20AEs%29.%20WOMAC%20scores%20decreased%20significantly%20%28P%5Cu00a0%3C%5Cu00a00.01%29%20after%20the%20cherry%20juice%20treatment%20but%20not%20after%20the%20placebo%20treatment%20%28P%5Cu00a0%3D%5Cu00a00.46%29%3B%20differences%20between%20treatments%20were%20not%20significant%20%28P%5Cu00a0%3D%5Cu00a00.16%29.%20hsCRP%20declined%20during%20the%20cherry%20juice%20treatment%20vs%20placebo%20%28P%5Cu00a0%3C%5Cu00a00.01%29.%20The%20decline%20in%20hsCRP%20was%20associated%20with%20WOMAC%20improvement%20%28P%5Cu00a0%3C%5Cu00a00.01%29.%20Walking%20time%2C%20acetaminophen%20use%2C%20plasma%20urate%20and%20creatinine%20were%20unaffected%20by%20treatments.%5CnCONCLUSIONS%3A%20Tart%20cherry%20juice%20provided%20symptom%20relief%20for%20patients%20with%20mild%20to%20moderate%20knee%20OA%2C%20but%20this%20effect%20was%20not%20significantly%20greater%20than%20placebo.%20Tart%20cherry%20juice%20lowered%20hsCRP%20levels%20and%20this%20effect%20was%20associated%20with%20improved%20WOMAC%20scores.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%22Aug%202013%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22eng%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1016%5C%2Fj.joca.2013.05.009%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%221522-9653%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22S56ZU2DB%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222020-04-21T18%3A28%3A49Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
