NISMAT Sports Fitness Evaluation [SFE]

Since the 1970s sports medicine professionals at the Nicholas Institute of Sports Medicine and Athletic Trauma (NISMAT) at Lenox Hill Hospital have researched performance factors related to the physical demands of sports in terms of injury prevention and physical fitness.

Our team includes orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, exercise scientists, biomechanists, engineers, nutritionists, athletic trainers and strength and conditioning specialists.

We offer a variety of services to help the individuals ranging from those transitioning from injury to a pain-free, active lifestyle, to serious athletes preparing for major competitive events.

Fitness testing/consulting services

Maximal Oxygen Consumption (VO2max)  

This test provides an excellent measure of cardio-respiratory fitness, using the Parvo Systems metabolic cart. This is the same system as is used by the U.S. Olympic team, and is renowned for its accuracy and reliability.  Our staff has performed thousands of VO2max tests, including on world class runners, gymnasts, basketball players and professional hockey teams.

VO2max testing can be used to assess your starting fitness level or to monitor increases in fitness as you train. In addition, this test can also determine your Anaerobic Thresholds (AT), or Ventilatory Thresholds. These thresholds are very useful guides for optimizing your training by identifying the level of exercise you can maintain comfortably for long periods of time. Both the ventilatory and respiratory compensation thresholds are determined by measuring exhaled gases as you exercise. The higher the intensity, the more CO2 you produce, due in part to anaerobic metabolism and production of lactic acid.  We can help you design training programs using the values we have measured, not estimated, during your testing.  Testing can be done on a bike or a treadmill.  

Comprehensive Fitness Evaluations

Our team includes orthopaedic surgeons, physical therapists, exercise scientists, biomechanists, engineers, nutritionists, athletic trainers and strength and conditioning specialists. These experts are involved in our Comprehensive Fitness Evaluation which provides assessment of:

Maximal Oxygen Consumption (VO2max)/Anaerobic Threshold Testing   This test provides an excellent measure of cardio-respiratory fitness, see above.  

Orthopedic Examination by one of our sports-trained physical therapists.  Our therapists will examine you in our laboratory and evaluate your readiness to participate in the activity or sport of your choice.  Referrals will be made as necessary.  

You will be provided with a written summary of our findings with specific recommendations for training.  

Strength/flexibility testing   

We can assess your quadriceps and hamstring strength and obtain the ratio between the two, and important factor for many sports, as well as measuring hip strength [known to be an important predictor of injury].  

Flexibility is assessed using 11 different tests, to provide an overall profile of flexibility.

Activity-specific conditioning

We can help you reach your goals for competition or for the return to an active, healthy lifestyle after injury or surgery.  Our on-site biomechanists, exercise and ergonomic specialists, nutritionists, can assist you reach your goals.  

We offer

  • Movement assessment s – Poor posture can contribute to chronic ailments, such as neck and shoulder pathology.  Our ergonomic and  human movement specialist, Daniel Hogan,  will assess your static and moving posture for occupational and recreational health.  The client will receive an exercise regimen designed to correct posture and promote overall wellness.
  • Workstation evaluation – On-site evaluation of work environment, which includes assessment of current functionality based on task and workload, lighting, equipment design and layout.
  • Transition exercise programs - from initial clearance by physician to full-return to sport or activity.
  • Functional movement assessment – using a state-of-the-art motion capture system [Smart DX, BTS Bioengineering], our experts will assess your movement patterns for asymmetry, which can predict predisposition to injury.

Sports Nutrition Consultation

We offer expert advice for novice and serious athletes.  As part of your nutrition consultation, you will receive in-depth analysis of your current diet with intakes calculated for micro- and macro-nutrients.  Beth Glace will use your food likes and preferred patterns in revising your diet to meet your goals for weight loss, improved health and optimized performance.

Wingate Testing

The Wingate test is an anaerobic test, performed on a cycle ergometer, that is used to measure peak anaerobic power, as well as anaerobic capacity.  All-out peak anaerobic power and anaerobic capacity are two values which are important in sports with quick, all-out efforts.  Short sprinting events rely heavily upon the anaerobic energy pathways.
